Can Stem Cell Therapy Treat Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is an illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia Burgdorferi that is transmitted through the bite of a black-legged tick. Similar to inflammatory and chronic diseases, Lyme disease can cause symptoms that make it difficult to function on a daily basis. With this disease on the rise, and the similarities between its symptoms and chronic illnesses, many people ask, “Can stem cell therapy treat Lyme disease?”

While there are limited treatments recognized by the CDC for Lyme disease, some patients claim that alternative therapies, including stem cells, have provided them with long-term relief. Stem Cell Institute does not have a specific treatment protocol for Lyme disease, but we do treat inflammation and autoimmune conditions, both of which can occur following a Lyme infection.

If you’re interested in stem cell treatment, the first step is to fill out an application. After one of our physicians reviews your application, a patient coordinator will contact you to guide you through the rest of the evaluation process. Your evaluation is free of charge!

Symptoms of Lyme Disease

Lyme disease can produce a variety of symptoms. Most patients notice a bulls-eye-shaped rash as the first sign of infection, but there are still 20-30% of patients who do not notice a rash upon infection. Some other common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Aches
  • Joint pain
  • Chills
  • Heart palpitations
  • Headaches
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Other flu-like symptoms

Late Stage Lyme Disease

Late-stage Lyme disease occurs when a patient doesn’t get diagnosed until months or years after their initial infection. Lyme can be difficult to diagnose due to its similarities to other chronic and autoimmune conditions.

The lingering and ongoing symptoms associated with late-stage Lyme are more serious and can leave lasting damage, such as arthritis and neurological issues. In the U.S. these patients will still most likely be prescribed the standard 10-14 days of antibiotics. However, this prescription won’t succeed in repairing damaged tissue in the patient’s body.

Patients who experience lingering symptoms six months or longer after their antibiotic treatment can experience what’s referred to as ‘chronic Lyme disease’ or ‘Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS). This condition is often associated with a weakened immune system and any combination of the myriad of symptoms associated with Lyme. Due to no proven treatment options, patients with chronic Lyme disease often look for alternative therapies and regenerative medicine for relief.

There is no treatment recognized by the CDC proven to treat Lyme disease outside of antibiotic treatment. But many patients continue to experience Lyme’s negative impact on their lives even after antibiotics.

Researchers have been searching for other answers for years. This research has resulted in possible solutions through alternative therapies and natural medicine, including stem cell therapy as a treatment for Lyme.

Research has been conducted using different types of stem cells for Lyme treatment. The type of stem cells used at Stem Cell Institute in Panama are mesenchymal stem cells and have been used successfully to manage and treat autoimmune diseases and other chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis. Many Lyme patients have reaped the benefits of stem cell treatments when seeking improvement, including celebrities like Kelly Osbourne, who saw her father, Ozzy Osbourne make incredible strides for Parkinson’s Disease after receiving stem cell treatment in Panama.

The way Lyme affects the human body is often similar to other serious autoimmune conditions. It can wreak havoc on body tissue and joints, leaving those affected feeling weak, fatigued, and living with daily pain.

At Stem Cell Institute, we treat autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from human umbilical cords following normal, healthy births. These cells reside in the umbilical cords of newborn babies and are known to help reduce inflammation, modulate the immune system, and promote tissue regeneration and repair.

MSCs pose no rejection risk because the body does not recognize them as foreign. We’ve treated thousands of patients with umbilical cord stem cells without any instances of rejection.

Golden Cells™ & Chronic Diseases

The founder of Stem Cell Institute Panama, Neil Riordan PA, Ph.D., identified superior stem cells during his research that are used exclusively at our treatment center in Panama City, Panama. Over the years of our team treating patients, we noticed that some experienced benefits above and beyond those of others.

Retrospective analysis of cells used in highly successful cases showed our research team that six particular cell lines were providing superior results. A rigorous screening process resulted in a molecular signature of highly effective cells for stem cell therapy. These Golden Cells™ have improved the lives of thousands of individuals suffering from chronic conditions.

Extensive research has not been conducted on the effect of mesenchymal cells like Stem Cell Institute’s Golden Cells™ on Lyme disease. However, these cells have been successful in providing relief and improvement for patients suffering from conditions similar to Lyme like rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

While Stem Cell Institute doesn’t have a treatment protocol specific to Lyme disease, we have successfully treated several patients for other autoimmune conditions who were also suffering from long-term (post-infection) Lyme symptoms.

Individuals interested in discussing options with our team are encouraged to fill out an application for our treatment protocol used for autoimmune diseases. All potential candidates have the opportunity to discuss their options with our medical staff.
