What is Heart Failure?
Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is not able to pump enough blood throughout the body for its normal function. The cause of this can be either functional or structural disorder of the heart. Common causes of heart failure include cardiomyopathy, hypertension, heart valve problems and coronary artery disease. There is no heart failure cure.
Can stem cells help treat heart failure?
With respect to the heart, stem cells have the ability to not only home into the damaged areas but also to initiate a cascade of biological events which both culminate in healing of the heart muscle. For example, animal studies have demonstrated that stem cell therapy will cause new muscle cells to be formed through stimulation of dormant stem cells that are already inside the heart muscle. In these studies, the administered stem cell also transformed into new heart muscle cells.

Which kinds of stem cells are used to treat heart disease and where do they come from?
The adult stem cells used to treat heart disease at the Stem Cell Institute come from human umbilical cord blood and matrix (allogeneic mesenchymal and CD34+). The mesenchymal stem cells are expanded at Medistem Panama’s state-of-the-art laboratory. Both fresh and expanded CD 34+ stem cells are utilized as well.
These umbilical cord stem cells are recovered from donated umbilical cords. Before they are approved for use in treatments, all umbilical cord-derived stem cell samples are screened for viruses and bacteria to International Blood Bank standards.
How are the stem cells administered for heart disease treatment?
A licensed physician administers the stem cells intravenously over the course of a few days.

- • The standard heart treatment protocol typically takes 5 days
- • 3 intravenous injections of expanded allogeneic mesenchymal and expanded CD34+ stem cells
- • 1 intravenous injection of expanded allogeneic mesenchymal and non-expanded CD34+ stem cell
- • 2 IV Vitamin C infusion (depending on the patients renal function)
- • Medical consult for hormones evaluation
- • Stemkine supplement for 1 month (2 bottles)
Will someone from the Stem Cell Institute be following up with me after I return home?
Our medical staff will be contacting you at regular intervals to see how you are doing. Periodic follow-up also helps us evaluate overall treatment efficacy. Therefore, our medical staff will follow up with you after 1 month, 3 months, 4 months, 1 year and 2 years..
May I speak with any successfully treated heart patients?
Yes, you may. Once you have been evaluated and approved for treatment, your patient coordinator will be happy to put you in touch with treated heart disease patients who have volunteered to share their experiences in Panama with others.
