This invention describes the methods and uses of novel pluri-differentiated human mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs). A method of isolation and purification is described for Dexter-type cultures, and therapeutic uses are included for enhancing the engraftment of hematopoietic progenitor cells or bone marrow transplantation, or for diagnosing, treating or preventing graft-versus-host disease. Further clinical applications are addressed, particularly in the diagnosis of leukemia.
