This invention describes a monoleucine-dependent, basolateral sorting signal useful for the modulation of the basolateral expression of basolaterally targeted transmembrane proteins. Specifically disclosed are the properties of a mono-leucine dependent basolateral sorting signal consisting of the amino acid sequence X1h2X3h4. Specific amino acid sequences are provided for such peptides or proteins comprising a basolateral sorting signal, along with the therapeutic uses thereof, such as applications in the treatment of cancer, atherosclerosis and psoriasis.
