Described herein is a gene trap construct comprised of a first reporter gene that activates a second reporter gene, which is useful for the identification and isolation of genes, especially transiently expressed genes. Further described is a cell, preferably a mammalian cell, containing such a gene-trapping construct, and a vector containing such a gene-trapping construct, as well as a kit for the identification and/or isolation of genes, especially transient genes. The invention thus introduces a process for the identification and/or isolation of genes, particularly transient genes, and such a process is useful in identifying particular genes of interest
