This invention describes an erythropoietin-inducible, erythroid-specific DNA construct consisting of a promoter sequence from a sheep juvenile beta globin gene, an erythroid-specific enhancer sequence from the locus control region of the human beta globin gene and a nucleotide coding sequence of interest. The enhancer sequence is described as comprising a DNase hypersensitive element from the locus control region of the human beta globin gene; and a nucleotide coding sequence operably linked to the promoter sequence. Specific properties are further disclosed.
