This invention introduces methods of isolating hepatoblasts from adult, embryonic or neonatal liver. Described herein is a process by which hepatic progenitors are isolated via panning techniques and fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Therapeutic applications include the treatment of liver dysfunction and the production of artificial livers.
