Human hematopoietic progenitor cell preparations and their expansion in a liquid medium

This invention describes methods and materials for transplanting autologous hematopoietic cells in a patient receiving cytoreductive therapy, via the expansion of cells in a medium containing the GM-CSF/IL-3 fusion protein and a mast cell growth factor. The culture medium is described as being preferably free of stromal cells while containing at least one cytokine effective for supporting the cells. Methods of removal, expansion and administration of the cells are provided, as are therapeutic applications in reducing metastases.
