Described herein are methods of lymphotactin use in increasing local populations of natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocyte cells in mammals. The invention relates to the use of lymphotactin or lymphotactin antagonists for therapeutic administration to a mammal for the purpose either of attracting certain cell types or of blocking and preventing such an attraction. Methods of protecting stem cells with lymphotactin and its antagonists are further disclosed. Also included are therapeutic and experimental applications.
