Described herein is a method of collecting embryonic-like CD34+ stem cells from a drained placenta which has been treated to remove residual cord blood via a perfusion technique which utilizes an anticoagulant solution and either or both of an umbilical artery and umbilical vein. Methods describing the process of exsanguination are included, as well as the means by which exogenous cells can be propagated in the placental bioreactor and bioactive molecules collected therefrom.
