This invention introduces a novel antibody specific for an antigen on a subset of primitive hematopoietic cells, methods and uses thereof. Described herein is an antigen that is expressed on a subset of human, hematopoietic mononuclear cells, including a hematopoietic stem cell population, but is not expressed on normal, mature myeloid cells and which binds to the monoclonal antibody MG1. Claims of the invention include uses of the antibody in the isolation of cell suspensions from human blood and marrow, wherein such cell suspensions are known to contain MG1+ human hematopoietic cells. Therapeutic applications include uses in bone marrow transplantation, gene therapy, and in the treatment of leukemia and other diseases of the hematopoietic system.
