Described herein are pylartin proteins which preserve progenitor cells, methods and uses thereof. The invention relates to a protein material which is effective at preserving progenitor cells such as hematopoietic progenitors. Specific amino acid sequences are disclosed. Therapeutic applications include myeloablation therapies in the treatment of cancer wherein myeloid reconstitution is facilitated by means of the specified protein. Additional applications include gene therapy, and the expansion of progenitor cell populations ex vivo to increase the chances of engraftation, and uses in improving conditions for transporting and storing progenitor cells.
