This invention describes the new fibroblast growth factor homologue polypeptide zFGF5, and its methods of use. The authors describe zFGF5 compositions for the proliferation of chondrocytes and their progenitors, and for inducing the deposition of cartilage. Also described are methods of administering a pharmaceutical composition comprising the zFGF5 polypeptide to a fibrocartilage, hyaline or elastic cartilage injury in a patient. Further therapeutic applications are provided, such as in the treatment of disorders associated with chondrocytes, such as with cartilage injuries and defects, and in the treatment of neurological disorders such as stroke, and in the development of products for treating heart failure, hypertension, bone defects, cancer, arthritis, and wounds.
