This invention describes a novel long-term system of cell culturing, which is configured and arranged such as to allow the continual monitoring of the dynamic processes that occur during the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells. Further disclosed are aspects by which the cells may be manipulated by focal application of growth factors such as BMP and CNTF during the monitoring, at which time electrical recordings may be made from the cells. The particular microscopic viewing apparatus is disclosed, as are recording methods. Uses are explained in the long-term culturing of cells, such as central nervous system or embryonic stem cells
