Herein is described a method of isolating and growing human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) from human umbilical cord blood serum. The invention relates to a process of collecting blood from the umbilical cord at the time of birth, after the infant has been separated from the umbilical cord, at which time the blood is collected from an umbilical vein free of anticoagulants. Further described is the process by which the collected blood is allowed to clot at room temperature and transported to a processing area where the aspiration of hMSCs is performed. Methods of obtaining the hMSCs from diluted bone marrow are included, as are therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine.
