Described herein is a method for screening test compounds to identify agents that may be used for inhibiting mitogenesis. The invention relates to a mammalian gamma II adaptin protein which binds to the Bcr homology domain of the p85 subunit of phosphatidyl-inositol 3-kinase and its role in receptor-mediated endocytosis. Further disclosed are properties of phathoidyl-inositol 3-kinase allowing it to bind to other receptors such as the platelet derived growth factor receptor and the insulin-like growth factor-1, colony stimulating factor 1, nerve growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor, stem cell growth factor, and epidermal growth factor. Claims of the invention include mitogenesis which results from the binding and internalization of these growth factors, and methods by which the mitogenesis is inhibited via the process of internalization. Therapeutic applications in the screening of mitogenesis inhibitors are included.
