Hepes based basal nutrient medium for the isolation and culturing of stem cells

This invention introduces a novel basal nutrient medium comprised of Hepes, sodium chloride and a protease, and its uses in the isolation of stem cells from tissue. Described herein are serum-free, companion cell- or feeder layer-free and organotypic, matrix-free solutions for the isolation and cultivation of clonally competent basal epithelial cells. Therapeutic uses of such media include applications in the production of epithelial tissue such as that of the epidermis, cornea, gingiva and ureter.
