Described herein is a method of generating a clinically significant volume of neural progenitor cells from whole bone marrow. This invention relates to means by which a mass of mammalian bone marrow cells is obtained and cultured in a medium having fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) or epidermal growth factor (EGF). Further disclosed are methods by which neural progenitor cells which have been cultured in this fashion may be utilized in the treatment of various neuropathological conditions, and in the targeted delivery of cells transfected with a particular gene to diseased or damaged tissue.
