This invention describes a method of remyelinating a demyelinated lesion due to injury in the brain or spinal cord of a patient, with a cell fraction containing cells that are capable of differentiating into nervous system cells. Results are provided for demyelinated axons that were remyelinated in a demyelinated rat model by collecting bone marrow cells from mouse bone marrow and transplanting the mononuclear cell fraction separated from these bone marrow cells. Recommended methods of treatment for human patients are also detailed. Provided are means of obtaining the bone marrow, diluting and centrifuging the cells, separating, collecting and suspending the mononuclear cell fraction, removing the supernatant, and administering the cell fraction to the patient. After injection into the patient, the mononuclear cell fraction migrates to the location of demyelinated neural tissue, where it differentiates into neural cells and forms myelinated axons in the demyelinated lesion approximately three weeks after injection.
