Described herein is a method for inhibiting the proliferation or differentiation of myeloid progenitor cells via the use of a myeloid progenitor inhibitory factor-1 amino-terminal deletion mutant. Further disclosed are therapeutic compositions and methods using the isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding a human myeloid progenitor inhibitory factor-1 (MPIF-1) polypeptide. Specific amino acid sequences and residues are provided to which the isolated antibody or fragment thereof binds, along with therapeutic uses thereof.
