Described herein are methods for increasing the antigen-presenting ability of monocytes. The invention relates to a process of obtaining and contacting monocytes with agents that elevate intra-cellular calcium concentrations and which induce bone marrow progenitor cells and endothelial cells to express molecules involved in the generation of immune responses. Further disclosed are methods by which the expression of molecules involved in the generation of immune responses may be modulated. Therapeutic applications are included in the treatment of cancer and leukemia.
