This invention describes a method of preparing a modified form of kit ligand, wherein the protein has been stabilized by an intermolecular covalent linkage. The biologically active, interchain disulfide-linked dimer of kit ligand consists of 2 monomers, each one having the same amino acid sequence, with the covalent dimer being free of such monomers and inactive dimers of kit ligand.
