Described herein are methods of generating new tissue via a liquid hydrogel-cell composition which includes a hydrogel with tissue precursor cells. Further disclosed are methods by which the liquid hydrogel-cell composition is delivered into a permeable, biocompatible support structure and allowed to solidify, wherein the tissue precursor cells are also allowed to grow and generate new tissue. Claims of the invention include a tissue-forming structure including a permeable, biocompatible support structure having a predetermined shape that corresponds to the shape of the desired tissue. Therapeutic applications in the treatment of bone, cartilage, nervous tissue and autonomic nervous system defects are provided.
